The Rainforest Journal: Outing #13 – Pre

(Wednesday 29-October-2014)

Alright so this week I’ve got myself a minor upgrade to my wildlife-loving toolbox: a small, relatively inexpensive compact digital camera: a Nikon Coolpix 6800 with 12x optical zoom and wifi connectivity.

Anybody who is even slightly tech-savvy will understand why switching to an actual camera is an upgrade over the one on the back of their phone, but just for the hell of it I’ll highlight the advantages. A few photos are really all I need for this of course, and dribbling-on about specs won’t be necessary.

First, the different between optical zoom. Shooting photos of wild animals, you can’t simply walk closer to get a better photo; you take a step towards them and they’re off faster than a bag of prawns in the sun. Obviously zoom is essential here, but every smart phone with zoom on the market (except the Samsung K-Zoom series) uses digital zoom, which just blows. Digital zooms are all software-based “imitation” zoom, and work by simply cropping the image as the camera receives it, so all you ever get are enlarged pixels that are blurred-over to hide the nasty edges.

Anyway, the camera on this phone only zooms in a maximum of 4x while the Nikon camera can zoom to 12x, so for comparison of image quality between the two, I’ve taken a photo of an average drain grating from 4x zoom using the phone’s digital zoom, and roughly 4x with the other camera’s optical.

The difference is pretty obvious. Bear in mind too, that the optical zoom on the little Nikon can reach 12x without any loss of image quality and the only reason I stopped at 4x in the second photo above was because the phone’s zoom only goes to that.

Ugh I made proper spaghetti tonight – with beef mince and all – and ate so much I feel absolutely stuffed like a pig.

Great for iron levels: since rarely eat any meat anymore and certainly not for the majority of the time – because I’m in the bush, but I have this massive urge to lay down to have my food coma.
